Autotab lets the adapter search for your car's protocol first. If the car stays quiet, it tries each one in turn and keeps the first that answers, so older cars that a quick search misses still connect.
Your car needs to be OBD-II: in the US from 1996, in the EU petrol cars from 2001 and diesels from 2004. Your adapter needs to support the protocol too. Many low-cost ELM327 copies have no J1850 hardware, and some cannot do K-line; adapters on genuine chips, such as OBDLink or Vgate iCar Pro, support all five. On K-line cars live readings refresh more slowly: that is the speed of the bus itself.
